Rights belong to every person
Human rights are inherent to all human beings. They apply regardless of nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language or any other status. They include civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, and they are interconnected and mutually reinforcing.
How human rights work
Universal
Human rights belong to everyone. They are not privileges granted only to certain groups or places.
Inalienable
Human rights cannot normally be taken away. Restrictions must have a lawful basis and comply with applicable human rights standards.
Indivisible
All rights matter. Progress in one area is closely connected with progress in others.
Equal and non-discriminatory
Every person is entitled to rights without discrimination and should have equal protection under the law.
Participatory
People should be able to take part in decisions that affect their lives and communities.
Accountable
States have duties to respect, protect and fulfil human rights and to provide effective remedies when rights are violated.
From declaration to implementation
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948, helped establish a common global standard. International treaties and mechanisms have since developed specific obligations, monitoring processes and pathways for participation.

States translate commitments into laws, institutions, policies, budgets and public services.
Monitoring
National institutions, courts, civil society and UN mechanisms examine progress and challenges.
Participation
